The 2010 NSS kicked off in February with a bicoastal launch at the Western Region Championships in Park City UT and a DH/SG weekend in the East at Sugarbush VT, providing competitors on both sides of the country an opportunity to go fast and have fun. The Western Regionals at Park City UT opens with two days of SG and SC racing on Thu-Fri Feb. 4-5, with the A/B and C/D groups having their SC SL held on separate days to provide adequate time for all the events.
In the east, the Sugarbush speed weekend starts with a DH on Friday Feb. 5, with a training run in the morning prior to the DH race. With everyone warmed up for speed, Saturday will have two SG races, the first of which will count in the NSS standings, and Sunday winds up the weekend with a super-combi for finale. Three days of speed training headed by Olympic downhiller Doug Lewis will be offered Feb. 2-4 - participation is limited, so be sure to register early. Details are available on the nemasters.org web site or call 888-651-4827 to register.
The following weekend of Feb. 13-15 the traditional Aspen speed weekend in Rocky Mountain division is also the national championship DH. The Aspen speed weekend is known as an excellent event, with a challenging course and good preparation. The first of the two Friday SG races will be counted in the NSS. On Saturday DH training will be followed by DH #1, which has been designated as the 2010 Skiers Edge National Championship downhill, which also counts in the NSS standings (as will the SG at the Sun Valley national championships at the end of March). The weekend winds up on Monday celebrating the President's Day holiday with two more DH races, the first of which will also be scored as part of the NSS.
The February schedule continues with two weekends at the northern end of the Rockies at Big Sky and Schweitzer. On Saturday Feb. 19, Big Sky will host a SG double-header, with both races counted in the speed series scoring. February winds up with another SG double, this time at PNSA's Schweitzer Mountain..
The action shifts to the Far West in March, with Mammoth Mountain running a 3-day event with 3 SG's followed by a Sunday finale SC. The Friday SG and the first of the two Saturday SG's count in the NSS. Action continues with a return to the East for the Eastern Regional championships AG at Okemo VT on Mar. 12 and another pair of DH's at Ski Cooper in Rocky on Mar. 21. The 2010 Speed Series wraps up with the SG at the Sun Valley national championships on Mar. 30-31.
